SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: TORTOISE / DISAPPEARS
Saturday Feb 13, 2010 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Almost alone among bands of the last two decades, Tortoise is a group that resists easy metaphors and analogies, who can be described as sounding like only themselves and no one else. Twenty years after its founding, the band’s signature and singularly inimitable sound—a fluid intersection of dub, dance, jazz, techno, rock, and classical minimalism, with no part overwhelming or dominating the whole—remains an American and international original. Further, while the group has spawned countless imitators, heirs, and followers—sincere, flattering, and otherwise—Tortoise remains unique in the world of contemporary music for their boundless intellectual curiosity, their unmistakable compositional voice, and their synthesis of seemingly contradictory sound worlds far from their doorstep.
Seriously, folks are talking about flying up for this show. Get your tickets while you can. This show will sell out.
Tickets are $15. This show is for ages 18+.

ROCK PAPER ROCK PRESENTS: SCREAMING FEMALES / JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD
Thursday Feb 18, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Bred in one of the country’s strongest DIY punk communities, the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based trio Screaming Females have actually got only one shrieking lady. Her name is Marissa Paternoster, and she is 2009’s answer to Sleater-Kinney’s 2006 breakup, using her throaty pipes and serious chops to channel that trio’s femme-shredder legacy to a new generation. The band’s pint-size leader — whose signature stage attire includes a mandarin Sergeant Pepper-style dress and a bowl haircut covering her eyes — is known for ripping until her fingers bleed.
Also playing is Nashville's JEFF the Brotherhood. Another Be Your Own Pet spin-off band featuring brothers Jake and Jamin Orall. The Brotherhood has been called "kraut punk", "psychedelic grunge" and "noise pop" drawing comparisons to bands like Hawkwind, Wipers, and early Sonic Youth. Their frenetic live shows have earned them near legendary status in the clubs and basements across America.
Doors at 8 / Show at 9 18 and up Tickets are only $8

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: COLOUR REVOLT / THE GRENADINES / ANDY'S TEA PARTY
Friday Feb 19, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Band bio for Colour Revolt which I don’t know how to write, and God knows I’m trying. Starting with the obvious: there’s a lot of guitars in Colour Revolt. But they’re not dumb guitars, that’s what I’m saying. It’s pretty sometimes, sure, but it doesn’t do to leave gorgeous alone, and sometimes you have to punch the blushing bride in the face, you the low-hearted puggish bridesmaid with nary a suitor. Ugly babies born with buck teeth which will fall out only to be replaced by wolf fangs. All of your children need braces, says Colour Revolt. All the dogs are better christians than we are. At best one can approximate the howl, but it isn’t worth much.
What I’m saying is, all your ugly babies will grow into baying canines who love Colour Revolt.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: THE CLIENTELE / VETIVER
Friday Feb 26, 2010 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
The Clientele formed a long time ago in the backwoods of suburban Hampshire, playing together as kids at school, rehearsing in a thatched cottage remote from any kind of music scene, but hypnotized by the magical strangeness of Galaxie 500 and Felt and the psych pop of Love and the Zombies. They put their stamp on a kind of eerie, distanced pure pop, stripped to its essentials and recorded quickly to 4-track analogue tape.
Instantly identifiable, the Clientele sound like no one else. It’s been said that the greatest bands always create their own individual sound; the Clientele have gone one further and created their own world.

Long the bards of downward mobility, Southern Culture on the Skids have always embodied countrypolitan. Now, with their new fifteen song covers collection, Countrypolitan Favorites, they've given the Go-Go country treatment to some of their favorite songs, creating a tasty buffet of tunes from Don Gibson to T-Rex.

YELAWOLF / THE ARRANGEMENT / G SIDE
Thursday Mar 4, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Before we can get into this review there are a couple things we need to get out of the way. Yes, YelaWolf is white. Skin color matters less than ever. Second, yes, he does look more like a Travis Barker than 50 Cent, but talent, not appearance, has emerged as the overwhelming factor in determining an emcee’s worth. Right? Good, now we can get into the details.
Hip-hop hasn’t ever quite seen anyone like YelaWolf, but much more importantly, they haven’t heard anything like him either. It’s not every day that a rapper can label his style as “a mix between Outkast and Lynard Skynard,” an accurate description, but that’s exactly the case for the Alabama native. Lean with a penchant for combining thickly drawled Southern slang with automatic weapon fast rhymes, Yela is fearlessly determined to break into hip-hop’s often cloistered ranks, and his opening salvo is his new mixalbum Trunk Muzik. You don’t have to like Trunk Muzik, but you do need to respect it.
Tickets are $10. Doors at 8; Show at 9. Ages 18+.

MAN OR ASTRO-MAN? / WALKER YANCEY (Early Show ALL AGES)
Saturday Mar 6, 2010 5:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
It has often been said that Man or Astro-Man? toured in the 1990s more than any other band. Spanning 49 states and over 30 countries, the band played for the greater part of the developed world, and, after 10 years of relentlessly exploring the earth, it became obvious that their research on humanity was complete and they could finally take a long-need cellular rejuvenation in their underground cryogenic center.
Now, however, the slumber is over and Man Or Astro-Man? must see what has become of earth in the wake of their absence. So indeed, for all of humanity, 2010 will be the year of re-contact. In addition to all the scientific experiments and live music demonstrations, MOAM? will host a variety of benefits and charities for earth specimens. The only club show in the United States currently booked is in their adopted home state of Alabama at the Bottletree.
Tickets for the show are $15 advance / $20 day of

MAUM PRESENTS: XIU XIU / GIRL IN A COMA / NOVELLER
Sunday Mar 7, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
This will be a famous album. To hear it is to remember music‘s native purpose, a howl against the gloom.
Xiu Xiu has long been known among the music bloggers as prolific, bordering on crazed, but with this new 14-song album, each song so different from the next and so fully realized, their creative ferocity is simply astonishing and rapidly taking on new dimensions.
With a heart too sensitive to accept humanity‘s darker side yet also unable to flinch from it, Xiu Xiu is a way of "owning your own shadow." Jamie Stewart has a novelist‘s eye for juicy details, and a poet‘s ability to wring impossible emotions out of the English language, finding black humor where there is usually horror, finding horror where there is usually apathy. And Stewart‘s history-spanning visions of birth and death have never come across more clearly.
Tickets for this show are $10 advance / $12 day of show. Doors at 8pm. Show at 9pm. Ages 18+.

ROCK PAPER ROCK PRESENTS: FRUIT BATS / BLUE GIANT / A SINGLEMAN AFFAIR
Tuesday Mar 9, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Fruit Bats is an folk rock band formed in 1999 by guitarist, pianist and singer Eric Johnson(I Rowboat, The Shins), the band's main songwriter and only constant member. Over the course of three records, the last two on Sub Pop (2003’s Mouthfuls and 2005’s Spelled in Bones), Fruit Bats have looked for ways to file down the cynical edge of modern life and found many. Using bright melodies, defiantly major-key chord structures, natural imagery mixed with the occasional blazing insight and tender observation, the Fruit Bats have never shied away from darkness, but they’ve refused to shy away from light. The Ruminant Band, the band’s fourth album, finds them striking out on new, more ambitious roads.

ROCK PAPER ROCK PRESENTS: ROGUE WAVE
Wednesday Mar 10, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
“Now we’re born again,” sings Zach Rogue on the closing track of Rogue Wave’s fourth studio album, Permalight. In September 2008, the band returned to Oakland following a summer tour. Two days later, the singer woke up and couldn’t move. It turns out Rogue had slipped two discs in his neck which were pressing on his spinal cord. Over the next few months his condition grew worse until he eventually lost feeling in his right hand. Confined to his bed, there was nothing doctors could do for him. In January the pain began to gradually lift, giving him just enough sensation to pick up the guitar and strum it. He celebrated the recovery the best way he knew, by pouring his relief into new material.
Permalight represents a great push forward for Rogue Wave. A punchy, deceptively effervescent set of multi-instrumental pop tunes, a giant acheivement for Rogue and his longtime musical partner, drummer-keyboardist-vocalist Pat Spurgeon.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: THE XX
Tuesday Mar 23, 2010 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Bonding over a shared love of stripped back anti-folk and mid-90s R&B, The xx’s unique sound befits a wide range of influences that include everything from Aaliyaah to Cocorosie, Rhianna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to the Chromatics, The Kills to Ginuwine, The Pixies to Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake to Tracey & The Plastics.
These influences combine via beautiful, hushed vocal duets and a brilliantly inventive use of samplers and low-end frequencies to produce the stark, sweet melancholic pop of this debut single. Available on 7” vinyl, ‘Crystalised’ also features a cover of band favourite Aaliyah’s ‘Hot Like Fire’ on the b-side that further expands The xx’s hauntingly soulful sound. Both tracks are produced by the band themselves and engineered by Cocadisco’s Rodaidh McDonald.
This show is for ages 18 and up. Tickets for this show are $12/14.

Buy Tickets Online
JAPANDROIDS (AKA JPNDRDS) IS A TWO PIECE BAND FROM VANCOUVER, BC. THIS 'BAND' STARTED IN 2006 AS A CREATIVE OUTLET FOR THE POST-TEENAGE ANGST OF BRIAN KING AND DAVID PROWSE. ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO BE A TRIO, THE BOYS DECIDED TO FORGO THE LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARE OF HAVING A 'LEAD SINGER' AND DO IT THEMSELVES. AS A CONSEQUENCE, JAPANDROIDS ARE 1 GUITAR, 1 SET OF DRUMS, AND 2 VOCALIZERS. THEY CALL IT GARAGE ROCK. THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOU CALL IT, AS LONG AS IT'S NOT MINIMAL. JAPANDROIDS ARE MAXIMAL - A TWO PIECE BAND TRYING TO SOUND LIKE A FIVE PIECE BAND. SUPPORTING JAPANDROIDS GETS YOU INTO HEAVEN - NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
Doors at 8pm / Show at 9pm 18 and up Tickets are $10

ROCK PAPER ROCK PRESENTS: HOCKEY / THE CONSTELLATIONS / THE POSTELLES
Saturday Mar 27, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
For a band that named its forthcoming Capitol Records debut album Mind Chaos, the collective thinking on modern dance-rockers Hockey is already crystal-clear: this is a band set for a worldwide breakout this year. Hockey played four hotly-anticipated gigs at the famed South By Southwest music festival in 2009, following a series of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn shows that stoked a chorus of on-line cheers and a notice in Paste Magazine's 10 New Artists to Watch in 2009. Formed in Los Angeles five years ago by founders Ben Grubin, lead singer, and Jeremy "Jerm" Reynolds on bass, Hockey is now based in Portland, Oregon as a quartet with Brian White on guitar, and Anthony Stassi on drums.
Solid Gold from Minneapolis open the show.
Doors at 8 / show at 9 18 and up Tickets are $8 adv / $10 d.o.s.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: BEACH HOUSE / WASHED OUT
Tuesday Apr 27, 2010 9:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
The Beach House you're about to meet isn't the same you may remember from before. Lives have been shuffled, tangled and re-aligned.
When Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally returned home to Baltimore last Winter, they were worn thin from touring and travel. They packed up their lives and settled into a converted church in upstate New York with producer Chris Coady. For a month they continued the birthing process, sweating and pushing out sounds inside a cocoon of their very own weaving.
$12 adv/ $14 day of Ages 18+. Doors at 8, show at 9.
