SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: J. TILLMAN (FLEET FOXES) / PEARLY GATE MUSIC
Monday Nov 23, 2009 8:00 PM

Perhaps now would be a good spot for a bit of back story, or 'biographical information'. JT moved to Seattle in 2004 after dropping out college where he was studying god-knows-what. Upon moving there he found a job working at a bakery, where he was allowed to record at night before his 4:30AM shift began. This led to a cassette that maybe 20 people heard, one of whom was Seattle legend Damien Jurado. Damien brought Tillman on tour about a year later, where every night he wowed audiences into exclaiming things like, 'Who is this weird mumbly kid' and/or 'Get off the stage.' Tillman would continue to tour through the US and Europe regardless of 'audiences', 'interest' and 'total lack of promotion or booking agencies'.
In late 2007/2008 (ish) Tillman signed with Western Vinyl in the US and Bella Union in the UK and, in 2009, released his least favorite record in his catalog, 'Vacilando Territory Blues'. The following year is kind of a blur.
Doors at 8pm / Ages 18 and up / $10/12 tickets.

Rock Paper Rock presents: HELEN GASSENHEIMER
Wednesday Nov 25, 2009 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Birmingham native, Helen Gassenheimer made her song-writing debut in beautiful Brooklyn, New York the summer of 2003 and looks back quite often, actually. It wasn't long before she was adopted by the musical collective Local Correspondents and was playing shows all over the place. Helen was soon joined by her creative Brooklyn-based cohorts Andrea Hendrickson, Bess Leonard-Cahn, Rachel Berk and Thomas Bryan Eaton and the Well-Enough Folk Band was born. Over the next few years Well-Enough gained the respect, admiration, and most importantly- interest in collaboration, from the cozy americana and folk scene in the city.
Her music is serious and homespun. Her delivery is ceaselessly captivating and sincere. Her intuitive melodies and thoughtful composition will never fail to surprise you.

UNWED SAILOR / NATIVE LIGHTS / SHAPES LIKE DINOSAURS
Saturday Dec 5, 2009 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Born in Seattle in 1998 at the tender age of intent, Unwed Sailor is helmed by Johnathon Ford. Pulling towards a bass guitar-oriented sound, the songs he had begun to craft did not fully feel right for Roadside Monument, thus the unbeknownst forming of Unwed Sailor. Not aiming for Unwed Sailor to fall into the regular confines of a typical band, Ford's ever evolving cast and crew has been tirelessly composed over the years of good friends and company. Unwed Sailor has shared the stage with Pedro the Lion, Mary Timony, Low, The Danielson Famile, Sufjan Stevens, Early Day Miners, Minus the Bear, The Advantage, The Starlight Mints, Battles, Mates of State, and Beach House.
“Supergroup” is a word that is sometimes carelessly thrown around on the local level, but one band that has most definitely earned the title is Native Lights. Johnathon Ford, founder of the indie outfit Unwed Sailor, Bryce Chambers of Ester Drang, Aaron Hamby of Callupsie, and Nathan Price of Vandevander.
Doors at 8pm / Ages 18+ / $8.

PELICAN / BLACK COBRA / DISAPPEARER
Tuesday Dec 8, 2009 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
When the quartet's first full length, Australasia, came out in late 2003, it was an experiment in crushing heaviness, albeit melodic and compositionally a breed apart from their contemporaries. The songs were full glacier-thick walls of guitars, there were also shifts and nuances that gave the songs room to breathe. These nuances became even more pronounced in Pelican's later recordings which have all been issued on Hydra Head Industries, ostensibly a metal label. Less amplified and ambient-style breaks in songs became more frequent while many of the riffs themselves became triumphant in nature. Pelican aims skyward in full embrace of major keys and overtly uplifting melodies.
Sometimes it takes a while to really hit your stride and find the best musical voice with which to truly establish a given project. Such is the arc of DISAPPEARER. Originally conceptualized in 2003, DISAPPEARER formed out of the remains of THERE WERE WIRES.
Ages 18+ / Tickets are $12/14.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: THE DUTCHESS & THE DUKE / GREG ASHLEY (of Gris Gris)
Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 8:00 PM
Dutchess and the Duke leader Jesse Lortz is discussing the genesis and execution of his band's sophomore record, Sunset / Sunrise, a slump-dodging opus that takes the dark, raw beauty of the band's debut and scales it up to distinctly luminescent heights, thanks to a graceful synthesis of painfully earned creative maturity and thoughtful production under Ashley's adroitly tuned ears. The Gris Gris frontman's analog-equipped, Bay Area studio was the ideal space for Lortz and fellow vocalist and guitarist Kimberly Morrison to arch their intimate musical dialog into the larger shape they had envisioned. She's the Dutchess. He's the Duke.
Though minor chords and romantically morose lyrical yarns about misplaced affections and spiritual inertia remain touchstones, there's a refreshing undercurrent of optimistic light running through. The innate grasp of classic '60s pop structures is still audible with a sly warmth and subtle twang all their own.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: BILL CALLAHAN / LIGHTS
Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
Unfolding like a first view of paradise, then a slightly less ecstatic second view of paradise and then finally a glance back over your shoulder at that stupid paradise bulls***, Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle surveys a landscape that grows organically, like the time two people spend together - or the time one person spends alone (with another). One way or another, it's awfully pretty - something's clearly making Bill feel like a natural man. And high in the saddle, with a pouch of Big League Chew and nine sweet new tunes in tow, he's riding herd over a diverse bunch of sounds by top-notch players. Sure, there's guitar, keyboards and drums, just like there's always been - but arranger Brian Beattie brought some old friends back into the picture: violins and French horns.
This show is for ages 18+. Tickets are $10.

CHRIS STAPLES (238 / DISCOVER AMERICA) // MATTHEW MAYFIELD
Tuesday Jan 12, 2010 8:00 PM
Buy Tickets Online
It's difficult to find much information, if any at all, on Chris Staples if you don't know where to look. As modest as they come, Chris is not new to the spotlight. Once the frontman for 238, and later his solo project Discover America, his career that has lasted for more than a decade makes him a well seasoned veteran....
Chris is on tour in support of his 2004 release 'Blackest Hair, Bluest Eyes'.
In 2008, Matthew self-released The Fire EP, an eight song songwriter-distinctive collection recorded in thirty hours for $1,000. The record quickly caught the attention of Birmingham's Live 100.5 radio station, and, in a sense, brought Matthew back to those lonesome bunk bed nights. A guitar and a room. Honest, underdone, a doubting-Thomas authenticity and, yes, palpably melodic. "Pain and secrets," he calls the record.
This show is for ages 18 and up. Tickets for this show are $8. Doors at 8pm; show at 9pm.

MOLINA & JOHNSON

Buy Tickets Online
Two of the finest indie-folk songwriters of the last decade, Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co.) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) come together under the Texas sky to quietly lay to tape 14 crushing, haunting tunes, leaving space enough in each to match their surroundings. In this collaboration each seem to hold the other's talents to fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poet's poets in a workshop, aimed to craft a singular, searing elegy. The album is also abound with contributions from other fine musicians, such as Magnolia Electric Co.'s Michael Kapinus and Texas songwriter Sarah Jaffe, whose plaintive vocals "All Gone, All Gone," accompanied by the sound of a crying saw, will stir in your gut for days.
Tickets for this show are $10. This show is for ages 18+. Doors at 8pm; show at 9pm.

ROCK PAPER ROCK PRESENTS: GIRLS / MAGIC KIDS
Thursday Feb 4, 2010 9:00 PM

Just as the Velvets crackled with New York City electricity and Smiths’ songs came soaked in Manchester drizzle, so the music of Girls captures the stoned and sun-brushed outlook of life in San Francisco. Taking the classic California pop template perfected by Brian Wilson and applying a woozy, narcotic makeover, Girls make music that sincerely glorifies adolescence - a youth of hopeful confusion and love strong enough to hurt you.
