YOUNG WIDOWS / MY DISCO / ARCLIGHT
Monday Mar 23, 2009 8:00 PM
The DC/Chicago/Louisville connection has been long-standing triangle of similar ideas, ethics and sounds, and Louisville, Kentucky’s Young Widows keep that spirit alive. Of course, the inventive guitar work, a signature of guitarist/vocalist Evan Patterson’s bands throughout his years in Breather Resist, Black Cross and The National Acrobat, is still intact and at its peak here. It’s basically solid, grooving, hypnotic, heavy noise-rock… The comparisons are for reference only. This is a different band, a different sound, a different idea: Young Widows.
MY DISCO, a reductive art-rock trio, is a Melbourne based collaboration between Liam Andrews, Rohan Rebeiro and Ben Andrews that formed in Australia in 2003. Their music is both a mirror of discipline and its inversion, with unsettling one or two note drills.
Tickets for this show are $8. This show is for ages 18 and up.

Prior to 2006, My Disco were notable for their use of odd time signatures. Agitated and angular are two words often used to describe their guitar riffs, while the bass has often been described as somewhat precise, with a minimalist feel present within all instrumentation.
The release of Cancer marked a new level of emphasis on minimalism. Everything was stripped back, and the band explained that their focus shifted towards the silence in between as much as the sound itself. The Andrews brothers' use of the aluminium-neck Travis Bean guitar and bass was also a notable change, the aluminium neck offering increased sustain and a distinctive tone.
Live performances prior to the release of Paradise showcased yet another refinement of their minimalist sound, with several songs consisting of only one note, repetitive single-sentence vocals and long-sustained guitar chords. Drumlines, although minimal, still offer dance-like, albeit disjointed, beats.

YOUNG WIDOWS | 8:00 PM
Arriving two years after their debut, Settle Down City, Old Wounds completes Young Widows' transformation into a top-shelf rock band firing on all cylinders. Forging the best parts of Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Fugazi and The Melvins, Old Wounds is a series of dynamic, thoughtful tunes anchored by cavernous grooves that will certainly push most speakers to their breaking point. For the unique production, the band reunited with uber-producer friend Kurt Ballou, who had been eager to experiment with recording the band in multiple environments, with the intent of capturing the definitive take of each song for the final cut of the album. Feeling most at home when they're not at home, they brought Ballou along on tour to record all of their live shows. After tediously combing through a dozen hours of recordings, they compiled and mixed the album. The result is a bonafide classic, overflowing with the sweaty euphoria of a great live show, and the high replay value of a perfectly sequenced, well-produced rock record.
