HYMNS / DEATH ON TWO WHEELS / THE BRIDGES
Wednesday Mar 11, 2009 8:00 PM

Hymns uses a type of rich and evocative story telling that could only come from the South. The songs have a rollicking, classic sound, rich with instrumentation and full of reflective lyrical vignettes. Originally from North Carolina and Texas, Hymns is now based in New York City.

Death On Two Wheels makes rock ’n’ roll dangerous again, with slurry-blurry lyrics, half-cocked dreamspeak of portents and regret, and a formidable guitar attack that recalls the nasty duels Allen Collins waged with Gary Rossington before Skynyrd’s final plane ride.

From Oxford, Alabama, the new, old sound is full of the issues of youthful life with a strange and compelling appeal to those who have gone this way before. This masterful mix of pop, folk and indie rock leaves you confident and expectant. Get ready to enjoy these fresh songs that carry the listener through a wonderful range of sound and emotion introducing- The Bridges.

This show is for ages 18 and up.
Tickets for this show are $8. Doors at 8pm.

THE BRIDGES | 8:00 PM
The Bridges were born July, 2002 with a disposition to blend lyric and harmony with haunting melodies and the poetry of reality. Brittany Painter lends her gifted voice, writing, and acoustic guitar to providing the basis for intriguing arrangements in an acoustic style reminiscent of the sixties and seventies. Natalie Byrd and Stacey Byrd provide the truly unique harmonies as well as playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and keyboards. Jeremy Byrd on drums and Isaaca Byrd on bass add a full and forceful edge to the acoustic foundation. The cousins hail from North Carolina and are presently based in Oxford, Alabama, coming together in 2002 to begin in earnest the pursuit of music writing, arranging, recording, performing, and enjoying the gift. This new, old sound is full of the issues of youthful life with a strange and compelling appeal to those who have gone this way before. This masterful mix of pop, folk and indie rock leaves you confident and expectant. Following the same bumpy trail as Kings of Leon, this Atlanta foursome seems to be in pursuit of darker mysteries on the band’s self-released debut. And unlike the Kings, they have more range and a greater reverence for ’70s classic rock, not to mention the eccentric bite of vocalist Trae Vedder. Could he really have been christened with such a propitious rock name? No matter, he has the same grit and red clay in his voice that Chris Robinson had before he got famous and complacent—but there’s something even more disturbing in Vedder’s delivery that almost veers into goth. Especially on a song like “Bobby Havis,” which shudders with psychedelic anxiety. It’s a song so haunting it could’ve been penned in Rose Hill Cemetery next to Duane Allman’s headstone.

HYMNS | 8:00 PM
Somethin’ good was cooked up in Texas …and it ain’t barbeque. It’s Hymns. They use a type of rich and evocative story telling that could only come from the South. The songs have a rollicking, classic sound, rich with instrumentation and full of reflective lyrical vignettes. Lead singer and songwriter, Brian Harding is a singular voice. Hymns will release their 2nd album, Travel in Herds on March 11th, 2007, on Texas-based independent label, Blackland Records. Hymns’ story is rooted in childhood friendship and plays out like a scene from Stand By Me. Hymns are elementary school band mates, Brian Harding and Jason Roberts of Harrisburg, North Carolina and Tony Kent and Matt Shaw of Celeste, Texas, whom are now based in New York City. Brian and Jason continued playing together till the end of University; when Jason went on to join Ben Kweller’s band as lead guitarist, and Brian relocated to NY to continue to forge forward with the band the two had originated. During Roberts’ stint in Kweller’s band, he became close with band-member, John Kent, who went on to form Blackland Records. Jason loved to play John the old songs he had written with Brian while on tour, and before long, John was hooked on the sound. more >>>
