TORCHE / HARVEY MILK / ARCLIGHT
Monday Jul 13, 2009 8:00 PM

Torche unfurled their self-titled debut in 2005 via Richmond, Virginia’s Robotic Empire. The glorious half-hour of blissed-out power-grooves, triumphant vocal harmonies and cosmic resonance within was variously hailed as “stoner pop,” “thunder rock,” and “doom pop,” but a consensus was quickly reached within the Fourth Estate: Both the underground and mainstream press had their hands halfway down their pants just thinking about listening to Torche. The band was immediately lauded as giants among men, leaders among sheep, and powerbrokers of a deadly new sonic idiom founded upon Brooks’ signature “bomb-string” detonation-detune. As Decibel magazine so righteously pointed out in May of 2005, Torche “carries on in the dizzying Sabbathian tradition of Floor, only potentially more bottomless and epic.” Seven months later, the same publication would declare Torche as the # 7 album of the year in its annual top 40.

Tickets for this show are $10/12.

Sworn Enemies is the Birmingham-based foursome of Adam Edwards, Wes Frazer, Jason Burns, and Byron Sonnier, a cajun transplant from Lake Arthur, Louisiana. Using a simple drum kit, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, clawhammer banjo, upright bass and a zydeco rubboard, Sworn Enemies calls upon their roots in the sounds of Alabama and Louisiana to deliver songs that range from upbeat, honky tonk slap-rhythm numbers to quiet, longing, frailing tunes. The band has been rambling their way across the Southeast, performing songs off of their self titled EP and rousing audiences into a footstomping, dancing frenzy!

Castanets is American music drowned then reborn clear-eyed and wet with sea spray. Castanets is murderous nights and the 10 west sunset and crying gulls. Castanets is Raymond Raposa. Castanets is Raymond Raposa alone, walking through the dark and crowded dancefloor, singing bare voiced (rangy, high, cracked and real) with acoustic guitar. Castanets is a four-piece or a five-piece, six-piece, seven-piece, all-of-us-everywhere-piece stomping out electric tombstone chants or something that sounds like Pink Floyd with more heart. Castanets is delta heart, Nashville hands, outer space brain.

Castanets is banjo and strings of bells and howling feedback and high plains drifting and horn sections and brother folk-rock riding in a beater Datsun with sister free-jazz. What's on their radio? Harmonia? Dirty Projectors? Waylon and Willie?

The truth is in the breeze and in the agate blue sky and under the earth. Keep your eyes open. Keep your back strong.

Tides of Man, the progressive rock group hailing from Tampa Bay Florida, released their debut full-length album, Empire Theory in early 2009. The Prayers and Curses that were once known as songs continue to rise from the meditations of our hearts, and out of the crushed skull of North Alabama comes the Pine Hill Haints.

The sets never repeat, the songs always evolve and change, and the sound forever continues to adapt. The haints strive to capture the dark pulse that was once known and feared among people's, communities, and culteres, and this rambling, broken, and dead outfit seek to harness the madness of train jumping, lonesomeness, depression, ever lasting joy, and the final mystery of life and death.

Come out and celebrate with the Haints for their second full lenght album due out on K Records. APT will be filming and friends Taylor Hollingsworth and K. will be joining.

This show is for ages 18+; Tix $8.

Teenagers. Those punk kids are nothing but trouble. Except when they help you write and record a great album. Myriad forces influenced Eleni Mandell in the making of her seventh full-length Artificial Fire: A long trek via two-lane, tree-lined highways through Oregon and Northern California; a dear friend with a hard-to-find shoe size; a pile of vintage T-shirts at a flea market. But an even bigger factor was the grownup artist getting back in touch with her Inner Teenager.

That youngster has been popping up a lot lately. You'll see her tearing up the floor when Mandell slaps 'Jessie's Girl,' the Cars, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Maps' on the stereo, and throws one of her living room dance parties. And she is a prime source of the enthusiasm coursing through these fifteen new originals, crafted by Mandell with assistance from her regular bandguitarist Jeremy Drake, bassist Ryan Feves, and drummer Kevin Fitzgeraldand co-producer Dave Trumfio.

SECRET HISTORY PRESENTS: YOURSELF AND THE AIR / THING ONE

With little musical experience among them and none a traditionally trained musician, Yourself and the Air began with one goal and one expectation: make music and feel better. The idea was, is and always will be chivalrous as artists, there is no other choice than to make art and share it. It’s about connection, about linking and about knowing that we’re never alone as long as we wake up to the same sun and sleep under the same moon. In 2006, it became evident that if we really are the humans we believe we are, we must become the people we know we are and treat each other as such. It was immediate, beyond words and thoughts, and what used to be the individual and solitary catharsis of a small family had become Yourself and The Air.

This show is for ages 18 and up. Tickets are $8 Advance / $10 day of.

"The Graves' seamless integration of guitars with electric piano and organ (courtesy of Mike DeBlasio's versatile Korg), along with Gleason's intense vocals (and the group's Jersey roots), often leads to comparisons to Springsteen, although the Band and the Grateful Dead hit the mark as well. What all those groups share, of course, is a dedication to timeless melodies, riveting harmonies and vivid, memorable songwriting. Yes, the Roadside Graves love America; now it's only a matter of time until America returns the favor."

FAKE PROBLEMS / NINJA GUN / SPELLS

Growing up is never easy, but when you're in a band it often seems impossible. Make the same record twice and you're chastised for being repetitive, but if you make too large of a sonic shift your fan base will desert you. Luckily Naples, Florida's Fake Problems have never had to deal with this dilemma because with each release they've not only organically reinvented their sound, they've also successfully redefined who they are as musicians and human beings in the process. The culmination of this is the band's SideOneDummy debut It's Great To Be Alive, which shows Fake Problems' unique brand of indie rock finally shaking off the insecurity and soul-searching of adolescence and sees the band embracing a sense of perspective that can only be gained by spending countless months on the road touring, laughing and writing music they believe in.

Ghost Rock is the new album from the Michigan-based collective NOMO. The album, produced by Warn Defever, sheds light on the way forward for a band that has been forging its own vital sound. This is not the Afrobeat of Fela, nor the revivalist funk of a forgotten decade. This record owes as much to Can, Eno, and MIA as it does Kuti, Francis Bebey, and Funkadelic. On Ghost Rock, NOMO arrives in a new place. There's no loss of steam as they incorporate new influences, instead NOMO breaks through with a matured and developed sound that is fully its own.

If not the first, then surely the most common question we are asked is how
we came to name ourselves Drakkar Sauna. We want to tell you. We want
you to know, if only so that you’ll stop asking. It makes us feel vulnerable,
it makes us feel judged.

We thought it sounded like a palindrome. What it comes down to is we didn’t have any scratch paper handy and our understanding of what a palindrome is wasn’t accurate. But that’s what happened. ‘Drakkar’ sounded like a palindrome. So did ‘Sauna’. We thought that two palindromes would make one bigger palindrome. Obviously, we were, in part, mistaken. I hope now your curiosity is satisfied and you will not think too poorly of us for our incomplete command of the language.

So where'd the name come from? The Duke & The King are Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers) and Robert 'Chicken' Burke (George Clinton/Drugs, Sweet Honey and the Rock/Toshi Reagon)are the two roving charlatans from The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, a couple classic American grifters who's lay was to masquerade as European royalty, put on bad accents, find a bandstand, dress up like Romeo and Juliet, stage on an obscene parody and skip town after the first act, ultimately getting them tarred and feathered. And so the name is a reminder, a sort of scarlet letter they'll happily paint over their hearts to help them keep it honest, the music, the poetry.

Bowerbirds' debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, was nearly one hundred percent focused on the thesis that the earth is a sacred place with merit beyond us, and that humans are just visitors here. Its contrapuntal harmonies documented a moment in the life of the songwriter and the life of the band - Beth Tacular and Phil Moore living in an airstream in rural North Carolina, building a cabin of reclaimed boards by hand in the woods - but did so without, as far as we could tell, delving into their lives at all. While these weren't protest songs, per se, they had the wry anger of a 'Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.' The songs were interconnected, both musically and thematically, a musical whitepaper of the very best, most listenable kind.

From the past (the haunting simplicity of 'Love Henry,'which Bob Dylan tells us pre-dates the Bible) to the future (the stunning emotional complexity of her song,'The Future'), the Texas-bred singer-songwriter navigates a new rock approach that is built upon the folk, blues and jazz spectors that populated her three acclaimed previous albums.

Ra Ra Riot skillfully melds elements of new wave and classic indie with sweeping orchestral chamber pop to startling effect. Epic and eloquent, dramatic and graceful, Ra Ra Riot's is inventive, ambitious and consistently conveys the passions of its creators.
