Stewart & Winfield Band | 9:00 PM
Stewart & Winfield is a name associated with Southeastern songwriting, memorable stage performances, numerous soul-satisfying studio recordings, and a selection of band musicians of tasty talents all offering a memorable atmosphere of both small-town and city energy - An experience loved for years by old and new Stewart & Winfield fans only described as good songs and good times flavored by that Georgia lowcountry sense of place that cuts through the music and lyrics.
The scene and sound has certainly touched more than coastal Georgia over the last 20 years. Singer-performers and Savannah, Georgia natives Stewart Marshall and Winfield Smith began entertaining Savannah and Athens together in 1989 and expanded the shows to Colorado mountain towns through 1994. A critically-acclaimed debut album in 1996, "...'bout time" was appropriately named as the long-awaited, first release of material and showcased the duo's soaring, high-lonesome harmonies. The recording also demonstrated their reverent passion for bluegrass, old-school country, and folk-rock. "...'bout time" has repeatedly sold out of pressings, a result solely of S & W's exhaustive touring schedule and solid word-of-mouth following.
Too country for rock and too rock n' roll for country, Stewart & Winfield's "Y'all-ternative, Harmony-Driven Roots Rock" experience could be compared to a similar sound of harmony-vocal styles of Crosby, Stills, and Nash backed by Tom Petty's band, the Heartbreakers. Drawing equally from the well of the smoky barroom, honky-tonk era Rolling Stones and John Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stewart & Winfield created a style all their own.
Five more albums would follow over the next 10 years including studio albums "Narrows" (1997), "Bum Parade" (1999), and double album "Lowcountry Blues" (2002) along with the very popular live recordings "Another Round" (2001) and the theatre recording side of "Lowcountry Blues". All independent albums produced by S & W's own Catatonia Records, 2004 also brought the release of a solo effort by Winfield ? a collection of tunes called "Strand". The single Sometimes which was recorded for an independent film soundtrack was rerecorded as a featured track on "Strand".
Bringing the evolution of their Americana sound to the listeners, S & W explored several hundred thousand miles of highway taking the studio to the stage. Relentless touring from 1996-2006 included the southeast college circuit from Baton Rouge to Nashville and Richmond to Tallahassee as well as western shows to Montana and the east coast from New York to Maine. Charleston, South Carolina to Charleston, West Virginia wanted evenings of S & W to hear that evolution of roots-rock songwriting driven by their traveling, powerhouse, five-piece band. With a concert log of over 1,200 appearances, S & W played for their enthusiastic markets, in arenas for national sporting events, for regional and international festivals, in support of over 12 different charity benefits, as both support and headline with national, chart-topping acts, and as special entertainment for world leaders.
At the SCAD Film Festival, S & W performed for director Sydney Pollack and actor/artist Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas. At Atlanta's Turner Field Braves Stadium and Philips Arena Thrashers home, they were invited annually to welcome the thousands of sports fans. From downtown Athens to Live Oak Florida and beyond, S & W have shared festival bills. The Georgia Public Radio (15-Station Network) has hosted S & W live studio performances and interviews. Corporate talent buyers, with offices in six states, contracted the band for 10 years. The Nationally televised 2002 Winter Olympic Torch Relay chose S & W as the act for the Athens, Georgia Classic Center. The S & W song We're In Trouble Now was awarded by the Georgia Music Industry Association as part of the 19th Annual Georgia Music Festival Songwriter's Showcase. National distributor, Redeye, featured the S & W song Killin' Time on the first compilation album of Redeye Record Label. The band's album catalogue package remains a Top Ten Seller on AthenMusic.Net ? S & W's exclusive merchandising partner. The band has opened as a support act for such artists as Edwin McCain and the Derek Trucks Band and groups such as Train and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, in her earlier bands, have been the opening acts for Stewart & Winfield. On numerous occasions, Athens, Georgia publications have voted S & W as one of the Top Ten Touring Bands in the Southeast, and in June 2004, they had the honor of an exclusive performance for the world leaders and international journalists at the G 8 Summit at Sea Island, Georgia. Prime Ministers of Great Britain and Italy and the German Chancellor all demanded Stewart & Winfield CDs as souvenirs.
The Stewart & Winfield outfit is still blending the blues, folk, rock, bluegrass and country influences together for the requested, refreshing, original music. In early 2007, S & W celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the debut album release with a concert at the world famous Georgia Theatre venue in Athens, and kicked-off a series of shows in favorite past and present markets. In 2008, in addition to a 12th Annual show in honor of Athens' Athfest Festival weekend, Stewart & Winfield are scheduled to return to Savannah for an original hometown concert at the historic SCAD Trustees Theatre as a benefit for "America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia" presented by the Second Harvest Food Bank. Following the exciting concert cause, the band will release their best studio recording to date with a July launch of the anxiously-awaited album-from-the-vault "Sandy Britches". With the help of Athens' own Iron Horse Records, "Sandy Britches" presents new, instantly-recognizable songs and older, re-worked favorites. "Sandy Britches" is to be released as limited edition copies and proceed to a digital-only format. To celebrate the new record and long-running Stewart & Winfield campaign, an exhibit of S & W memorabilia and art displays will be unveiled the week of the "Sandy Britches" release at ATHICA ? The Athens Institute for Contemporary Art. S & W fans and Athens music history enthusiasts will enjoy the 20-year timeline of one of Georgia's most popular music groups from their travels to the impressive collection of poster art.
From past, present, and undeniable potential, the music and scene of the Stewart & Winfield event continues to offer rare and relaxing, not-to-be-missed, acoustic and electric, live performances. Pleasing to the ear, the laidback S & W experience is an on-going family Festival of fans seeking only the Good Stuff much like Sinking Down with some Sandy Britches and Killin Time under Blue Sky at the Tybee Island, Savannah Beach Bum Parade. Only Sometimes, These Days, can you find a temporary Getaway as you listen. So in 2008, Here We Go Again where Life Unwinds for Another Round from Stewart & Winfield ? a brand new archive album on Iron Horse Records. From your Head & Heart to your toes, we hope you enjoy the music. It's a Slow & Steady climb and an occasional Bourbon Tide, but the unforgettable faces at the ongoing show make it Easy To Believe. See you at the Melting Point on Friday November 13th!
