Dromedary Quartet | 8:30 PM
Dromedary Quartet embodies an inventiveness and precision fundamental to great American jazz and an exotic unpredictability deep-rooted in some of the best World Music. While audiences may find themselves “somewhere in Central America or around the Mediterranean Sea, sitting around a gypsy campfire or with a caravan of Bedouins,” they also might catch a whiff of Medeski, Martin, & Wood, John Zorn and Masada, or even Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (All Music Guide)
In 2001, Dromedary was one of the most unique experiments going on in the musical hotbed of Athens, GA. National Public Radio took notice and dubbed them the “great unknown duo” while placing their “hauntingly beautiful” music in between news stories. From 2000-2005, co-founders Andrew Reissiger and Rob McMaken pumped out 3 CDs, toured Europe, and managed to build a cult-like regional following. In 2005, McMaken reunited with longtime friend and drummer Louis Romanos who relocated to Athens after Hurricane Katrina and who happened to have been one of the most in-demand drummers in New Orleans. Chris Enghauser was quickly added on upright bass and Dromedary Quartet was born. After a slight departure from their regular touring schedule, this Crimson Moon performance promises to be something special. Reissiger (who nows lives in San Francisco) and McMaken will be reuniting for the first time to make music since McMaken became a brand new father (expect some new lullabies?). As well, Reissiger recently performed at East Africa's largest Swahili festival in Zanzibar, Tanzania, sharing the stage with Uganda's rising star Omega Bugembe Okello and legendary Cameroonian bassist Andre Manga (Paul Simon, Josh Grobin, Angelique Kidjo).
