THE NORMALTOWN FLYERS | 8:30 PM
Few of Athens' institutions have entrenched themselves as solidly into our town's social history as Allen's Hamburgers. With affiliations as varied as former Gov. Zell Miller and the B-52's, Allen's has become a meeting place for people from all walks of life; everyone in Athens is bound to pass through its doors sooner or later. And if there was a soundtrack to this future folklore in the making, it would surely be written by the Normaltown Flyers. ''Allen's ... it's kind of like home. It's where we got started, actually,'' sighs head Flyer, Brian Burke.
Formed in 1979, shortly after Burke finished college, the Normaltown Flyers have been a mainstay in the Athens music scene since its earliest days. Having survived some lineup changes and a major-label relationship that broke up a few years ago, the Flyers are still going strong, currently comprised of Burke (the only remaining original member) and Tom Ryan.
The two have released their most recent CD, ''Cheers, Y'all'' (Airborne Records), recorded with the intimacy and immediacy of a live acoustic set. Of the 21 tracks, nine are covers, pleasures enough in their own right. But it is the originals that highlight why Burke has become an Athens musical treasure. His pure singing voice is a perfect match for his honest and succinct emotional lyrics.
