If there’s no education like adversity, then Hurt is the smartest band around. On the quartet’s second Capitol album, Vol. II, the sweat and sacrifice is palpable in the dozen potent tracks, which further the dramatic alt-metal meld forged on 2006’s Vol. 1. Singer J. Loren goes so far to say that Hurt’s music has the power to save lives: “I know that’s not unfounded, because people have written to the band and told me that.” And it’s saved his life—“I’m compelled to do it. I have no other functionality in this life,” he states unequivocally. His goals for the band are equally forthright: “I want to invoke feeling. Period. If listeners feel good, if it compels them to tears… If all you can think about is a song for five minutes at a time, I’m happy to be that distraction. I’ve wasted my whole life to be that.”

Formed in early Spring of 2005, Within Reason brings together a collaborative sound of alternative rock mixed with hip-hop influenced lyricism.
Within Reason frontman [Chris Dow] and drummer [Grif Zarbough] met through a mutual friend in the Fall of 2004. As a result, Missouri native and guitarist [Mook] hooked up with the crew after playing house sessions for two years with Grif. Shortly after, guitarist [Kevin Smith] joined the band after meeting with Dow at a Shade Tree show in Birmingham . Coincidentally, the last addition to Within Reason was former Shade Tree bassist [David Koonce]. Since playing their first show In August 2005 at the CopperTop in Tuscaloosa, AL, Within Reason has lit up the Birmingham scene.

EVEN THOUGH ANOTHER HERO WILL BE NEW TO THE CIRCUIT IN 2008 DON’T WRITE THEM OFF AS JUST ANOTHER BAND. WITH NAMES LIKE BRIAN JONES (FULL MOON CIRCUS) PROVIDING SEARING VOCALS, BILLY HARVEY’S (THE DEADLINE) SKILLFUL MASTERING OF THE GUITAR, KRIS EDDINS (YEAR AND A DAY) GIVING THE LOW END ON BASS AND JON STEPHENSON (JEFFERSON BROTHERS) IMPECCABLE SENSE OF TIMING, THE END RESULT CAN PROVE ONLY ONE THING, EXPERIENCE DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

He started singing when he was 7 years old after his parents bought him a small, 2-speaker radio with an FM dial and cassette deck on it. He sang with the radio everyday out on the porch, recording various songs, playing them back and writing out the lyrics to them. This is where Ryan got his start with music. His parents, grand-parents, aunts and uncles were all musicians – acoustic and electric guitarists, as well as vocalists – so you could say that music ‘runs in the family’. In fact, Ryan was so diligent to pursue singing because of the inspiration his Uncle Rocky gave him. Rocky Shampine is a guitarist and singer who loves to play rock music and continues to do so today.

Benjy Davis (lead singer, acoustic guitar) writes songs that deal with real life, stirring feelings with which listeners young and old can instantly relate. The arrangements are delivered through the combined musicianship of six talented individuals who creatively come together as one unique voice, The Benjy Davis Project. The group has quickly gained a national audience and the attention of music business veterans. They were a surprise hit of the 2003 New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, selling out all of their CDs at the Virgin Records tent immediately following their performance, and were the two-week festival's top group at Virgin's autograph table. A Virgin Megastore representative said he was caught by surprise, not ready for the eruption of something like Beatlemania. Their CD titled "More Than Local" became one of the top 25 discs sold in New Orleans the week of their performance.
